A longstanding tradition of Special Olympics, the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) Final Leg is a high-profile event that occurs before major Special Olympics events, bringing together law enforcement officers and athletes who run side by side, carrying the Flame of Hope for miles across cities, towns, and landmarks to raise awareness and build excitement for the Games. The Law Enforcement Torch Run will make history in 2026 with the longest Final Leg route in USA Games history and the first-ever coast-to-coast run, spreading awareness nationwide. Beginning at the Eternal Flame of Hope in Chicago, IL, the torch will journey across the country before the Final Leg makes multiple stops throughout Minnesota. The run will culminate in the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony, marking the official start of the Games.
The tradition of the LETR Final Leg is for law enforcement officers representing their country, state, and Torch Run program to act as Guardians of the Flame and carry the Special Olympics Torch and Flame of Hope to the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics Games. This LETR event is called the Final Leg because it represents the culmination of Torch Run events that occur annually throughout that country, state, and/or the World.

The official torch of the LETR Final Leg for the 2026 USA Games is a powerful emblem of unity, perseverance, and community. Its design intricately weaves together elements that reflect not only the spirit of the USA Games but also the diverse landscape of its host, Minnesota. The flowing curves traverse the torch like the many rivers and lakes of the region, symbolizing the pathways of the Torch Run as it crosses the country, carrying with it messages of hope, determination, and inclusivity. The deep, rich color of the torch draws inspiration from Minnesota’s iron ore, highlighting the state’s vital mining heritage and strength.
At the base, the figures of a law enforcement officer and an athlete stand together, symbolizing their partnership and mutual support, highlighting the unifying power of sports and their shared commitment to promoting social inclusion and respect.
Stars scattered across the torch in touches of gold represent the Special Olympics athletes, each a beacon of talent and courage. The prominent North Star not only nods to Minnesota’s nickname, “The North Star State,” but also stands as a symbol of guidance, inspiration, and aspiration. It shines brightly, mirroring the guiding light that these athletes provide through their stories of resilience and achievement.
Overall, this torch is more than an object; it is a testament to the extraordinary journey of athletes and supporters alike, championing the values of strength, courage, and unity on the road to the Games.
